Custom Tabs for Binders

The trade uses these names interchangeably and they all describe one thing: a sheet the same size as the pages around it, with a die-cut tab standing proud of the edge so a section can be found without hunting. Binder dividers, dividers for binders, 3-ring binder dividers, tab dividers, divider tabs, index tabs and index dividers are the same product under different labels.

The distinction that actually matters is not the name — it is whether the tab is printed with your wording or left blank for you to fill in. Everything below is about the printed kind.

The cut is how many tab positions step across the width of the page before the pattern repeats. A 1/5 cut steps five tabs across; a 1/10 steps ten. Wider cuts give each tab more room for text, narrower cuts fit more sections into a single pass.

When a set needs more tabs than the cut allows, the extra tabs step down into additional staggered rows called banks, so a thirty-section binder stays readable rather than cramming thirty labels across one edge. Every cut from 1/2 through 1/15 is available.

The limit is the ring, not the divider. A 1-inch ring holds roughly 175 sheets of 20 lb paper, a 2-inch about 375, and a 3-inch about 550 — and every divider you add occupies the space of two or three sheets because index stock is heavier than copy paper.

In practice, a set of ten to fifteen dividers uses a small fraction of any binder's capacity, and the number of sections is driven by how the document divides rather than by what the ring will take. Where people run into trouble is the tab extension, not the thickness: past about fifteen sections in one bank the labels get too narrow to read, which is exactly why banks exist.

Standard 3-hole punching fits any US 3-ring binder and is what most orders take. Unpunched is available where the binder uses a different pattern or the sheets will be drilled later as part of a larger book.

Collation is the option most often overlooked, and it is the difference between a set you can use and a job somebody has to do. Collated means the dividers arrive in sequence, one complete set after another, ready to drop straight in. Uncollated means they arrive stacked by tab position — all the number ones together, all the number twos together — and somebody on your side assembles every set by hand. Uncollated is cheaper, and on a 200-set order that saving costs several hours of labour.

With a collated set there is nothing to work out: the sheets are already in order, so open the rings, drop the stack on, and close them. The first tab is the top sheet.

The only step worth care is what goes between the dividers. Load the section contents behind each divider rather than in front of it, so the tab announces what follows. It sounds obvious and it is the single most common way a binder ends up one section out of step — usually because someone assembled it from an uncollated stack and lost their place partway through.

For presentation binders, a title page in front of the first divider and a contents page listing the tab names in order makes the set usable by someone who has never seen it before. That contents page should carry the same wording as the tabs, exactly — not a paraphrase.

For one or two binders, printable divider templates and a home printer are a perfectly reasonable answer, and we publish free templates for exactly that. Print, trim, punch, done.

It stops being reasonable at volume. Home-printed tabs have no reinforcement at the extension where a tab actually fails, the alignment drifts between sheets, and every set has to be assembled by hand. The moment the same binder is being reproduced for a department, a district or a client base, printed sets stop being the expensive option — an 8-tab paper set runs $2.44 each at 250 sets with setup included, which is less per set than most stock divider packs off a shelf, and it carries your section names rather than numbers.

Paper is the default and suits most binders: 90 lb index as standard, 110 lb where more stiffness is wanted, in 19 Mylar colours, with optional Mylar reinforcing along the tab edge. That reinforcing is worth taking on any set that will be handled regularly, because the extension is where paper tears first.

Poly is tear-resistant and wipes clean, in 11 colours, and earns its higher price where the binder lives somewhere demanding — a plant floor, a clinical setting, a vehicle, anywhere it is handled with gloves or wet hands. For a binder that sits on a shelf and is opened weekly, paper with Mylar is the better value.
