Binder spine label questions
What size is a binder spine label?
A spine insert for a letter-size view binder is 11 inches tall and as wide as the binder's ring size: a 1-inch binder takes a 1" × 11" insert, a 2-inch binder a 2" × 11" insert, and so on from 1/2 inch up to 5 inches. That is the size of the clear pocket sewn into the spine of a standard view binder. If your binder is an odd size, measure the pocket's width and enter it as a custom width — the generator lays out any width from 1/4 inch to a full sheet.
How do I make a binder spine label in Word?
You don't need to. Word makes you build a rotated text box, guess the width, and fight the printer margins. This generator does the layout for you: choose the binder size, type the title, and it produces a PDF with the text already turned to read down the spine, sized to fit, with cut lines between labels. Print it on cardstock at 100% and trim.
Which way should the text read on a binder spine?
In the United States the convention is top to bottom — the same direction as the spine of a book — so the label reads correctly when the binder lies face up on a desk. Many European publishers run spines bottom to top. The generator does either; "Top to bottom" is the default.
What paper should I print spine labels on?
Plain white cardstock, 65# to 110#, so the insert slides into the pocket and stands up straight instead of curling. Ordinary copy paper works in a pinch but sags. Print at 100% scale with "fit to page" off, or the widths will shrink. Because the label is 11 inches tall, the printer's unprintable margin clips nothing that matters — the text is centered along the spine.
Do these match the pre-cut spine inserts sold in office stores?
Yes. The widths match the standard clear spine pockets that every major view-binder brand uses, so a label made here fits the same pocket a store-bought pre-cut insert would. You are printing on your own cardstock rather than on a perforated sheet, which is why the PDF adds dashed cut lines between labels.
Can I number a set of binders — Volume 1 of 12?
Yes. Turn on "Numbered set of binders", type the word you want (Volume, Book, Binder, Vol.), and the range. Every label carries your title lines plus its own number, and "of 12" is optional.
