What this looks like in practice
Recent requests, all from buyers whose previous source went away: a construction company’s proposal-book dividers, solid red index stock with six numbered tabs, left unpunched so their own machine can coil-bind them. A law office’s seven-tab estate set, re-cut from 1/7 to 1/4 so the titles read at 12pt. A clinic’s five-tab patient set, punched and collated so it drops straight into the binder. None came in as a spec sheet; they came in as a description and a photo, and that was enough to start.
Common questions
- What can you tell from a photo of my tab dividers?
- Almost everything that matters for a quote: the cut (how many tab positions step down the edge), whether the tabs are Mylar-reinforced or plain cut stock, whether the sheet is white or a colored index stock, the sheet size, the type and color of the printing, and how the set is bound or punched. The one thing a photo cannot settle is the exact paper weight and shade, which is why we offer a paid sample run before a full order.
- My old supplier went out of business. Can you reproduce the same set?
- In most cases, yes. Custom index tabs are a die-cut product with a small number of variables, and we have been cutting them in Schaumburg, Illinois since 1993. Send the photo, tell us how many sets you order at a time, and we will say plainly whether it is a standard set you can price in the designer today or a shop job we quote by hand.
- Do you offer samples before a full order?
- We offer a small paid sample run so you can hold the stock, color and print before committing to the full quantity. We do not send free samples; the sample run is priced as a short job and the cost is stated up front.
- Is it cheaper to just use the online designer?
- If your set is a standard one — white 90 or 110 lb index, a standard cut, black or colored print, Mylar tabs in one of 19 colors — yes, and faster too. The designer prices it instantly and draws a free PDF proof. Send the photo anyway if you are not sure; we will tell you which path fits.
- What if my tabs are a colored sheet, or unpunched for coil binding?
- Those are shop quotes rather than designer orders, and they are common. A solid-color index stock, an unpunched binding edge so your own machine can coil or comb bind, a non-standard sheet size, or a tab cut we do not list online are all things we make; they just need a person to price them.
