How to Order Custom Index Tabs Online (Step by Step)
Ordering custom index tabs is easier than most people expect — you design everything online, watch the price update as you go, and approve a proof before anything prints. Here's the whole process, start to finish.
The whole thing usually takes just a few minutes, and you don't need an account to see pricing.
Step 1 — Pick paper or poly
Start by choosing your material. Paper tabs are the everyday standard and can be Mylar-reinforced so they don't tear. Poly (plastic) tabs are tougher and water-resistant for high-handling sets. Not sure? Our paper-vs-poly guide breaks it down.
Step 2 — Set your cut and number of tabs
Choose your tab cut (how many positions sit across the page — 1/5 is the most popular) and how many tabs are in each set. If you need more tabs than the cut allows, they automatically step down into additional staggered rows called banks.
Step 3 — Type your tab text
Enter the label for each tab. You can type custom text, generate sequential numbers (like 1–100), use A–Z letters, months, or Roman numerals. A live preview shows exactly how the text fits at your chosen size and font.
Step 4 — Choose colors and finishing
Pick a color for each tab (19 paper or 11 poly colors — mix them to color-code sections), then set options like 1- or 2-sided printing, 3-hole punching, Mylar edge reinforcing, and collation.
- Color-code sections for fast lookup
- Add Mylar reinforcing so tabs don't tear out
- Choose collated sets so they're ready to insert
Step 5 — See live pricing, then check out
Your price updates as you configure, so there are no surprises. Choose your quantity (25-set minimum, with volume pricing as you go up), add to cart, and check out securely.
Step 6 — Approve your proof
After you order, we email a PDF proof. Nothing goes to print until you approve it — so you can confirm the spelling, colors, and order of every tab. Paper tabs then ship in about 5 business days.
Ready to start? Design paper or poly tabs with live pricing whenever you are.
New since this video was recorded
The designer now auto-fills tab text for you: type the first entry and use the fill tools to generate sequential numbers (1, 2, 3… up to any range), letters A–Z, months of the year, or Roman numerals across every tab in one click — no retyping.
