Collated vs. Uncollated Index Tabs — What's the Difference?
When you order index tabs, you'll see the word "collated" — and it makes a real difference in how much work lands on your desk when the box arrives. Here's what it means in plain terms.
Collated = complete, in-order sets
A collated order gives you finished sets: each set has one of every tab, stacked in order, ready to drop straight into a binder. Order a 10-tab set 100 times and you get 100 complete, ordered sets — no sorting required.
Uncollated = separate stacks by position
An uncollated order gives you stacks of each individual position — all the tab 1s together, all the tab 2s together, and so on. You then interleave them by hand into finished sets. It can cost a little less, but it's a lot of manual assembly for anything beyond a few sets.
Which should you choose?
For almost everyone, collated is worth it — especially for legal, medical, and office binders where staff just need a ready-to-use set. Uncollated only makes sense if you have a specific reason to assemble sets yourself.
- Choose collated for ready-to-insert sets (the usual choice)
- Choose uncollated only if you'll assemble sets in-house
- Tabzoola collates sets in order by default so they're ready to use
