10 Tab Dividers, Printed to Your Sections

The cut is how many tab positions step across the width of the page before the pattern repeats — so a 1/10 cut steps ten tabs across, each occupying a tenth of the edge. It is a statement about geometry, not about how many sheets you get.

That matters because it sets your label length. At 1/10 each tab is roughly an inch wide, which comfortably holds a short word or a number and will not hold a phrase. If your sections are named rather than numbered, count the characters before committing to the cut — this is the single most common reason a set has to be redesigned at proof stage.

Ten is a good count when the material genuinely divides into ten roughly equal parts, and a poor one when you are forcing a structure to fit a pack size. Stock dividers come in fixed counts, so people bend their sections to match — printing to order removes that constraint entirely, and any count from 2 to 150 is available.

The practical test is whether every tab earns its position. A binder with three heavily-used sections and seven that are opened twice a year is better served by fewer tabs and clearer wording. Conversely, if two sections keep getting hunted through, they want splitting regardless of what that does to the round number.

Numbered tabs are the clearest case for ten, because the count and the numbering agree and nobody has to read anything to navigate. Enter the range and the designer sequences it; there is no typing each tab and no risk of a transposed number.

Decimal filing systems — where sections run 1.0 through 10.0 with subsections beneath — sit naturally on a 1/10 cut too, with the major divisions on the tabs and the subsections inside. Where the subsections themselves need tabs, a second bank handles it rather than trying to fit twenty positions across one edge.

A ten-section binder is right at the point where a contents page starts earning its place. Below about eight sections a reader can take in the whole tab set at a glance; past ten they benefit from a list at the front.

One rule makes it work: the contents page must repeat the tab wording exactly, not paraphrase it. A contents entry reading “Vendor Agreements” against a tab reading “Contracts” sends the reader hunting, which is the precise thing the binder exists to prevent. If the tab wording is too short to be clear on its own, that is a signal to widen the cut rather than to explain it in the contents.

Ten-tab sets tend to end up in reference binders that get opened daily — policy manuals, SOP binders, training packets. That handling lands on the tab extension, which is where paper fails first.

Mylar reinforcing bonds a clear or coloured film along that edge and is worth taking on any set that will be in service for years. Where the binder lives somewhere harder still — a plant floor, a clinical area, a vehicle — .015 poly is tear-resistant and wipes clean. Both print one or two sides, in 19 Mylar colours or 11 poly.
