What are tab dividers?
Tab dividers are sheets the same size as the pages around them with a die-cut tab extending past the edge, so a binder or chart opens to the right section without hunting. Tab dividers, binder dividers with tabs, index dividers, divider tabs, and dividers and tabs are all names for the same product — the real distinction is whether the tabs are printed with your wording or left blank.
Do custom tab dividers fit standard 3-ring binders?
Yes — the standard sheet is letter size, 8.5 × 11 inches, finishing at 9 × 11 with the tab extension, and 3-hole punched to fit any US 3-ring binder. Bottom-tab (hanging) sets run landscape for top-bound books, and unpunched is standard for sets a bindery will drill or coil afterward.
How many tabs can one set of dividers have?
From 1 to 150 tabs per set. The cut controls how many tab positions step across the page edge — a 1/5 cut steps five, a 1/10 steps ten — and a set with more sections than the cut allows arranges itself into staggered banks automatically.
What are tab dividers made of?
Two materials. Paper tab dividers run on 90 lb or 110 lb white index stock, with optional Mylar film reinforcing the tab edge in any of 19 colors. Poly tab dividers are solid .015-inch plastic — wipe-clean, tear-proof, in 11 colors, with white ink available for dark sheets.
Are custom tab dividers expensive compared to store-bought?
At small quantities, stock packs win. The crossover comes fast: an 8-tab custom paper set is $8.00 per set at the 25-set minimum and $2.44 per set at 250 — with your own section names printed on the tabs, collated, punched and reinforced. At around 250 sets, custom costs less than most store divider packs.
Can I make my own tab dividers instead?
Yes — and we publish free index tab templates with real production geometry for exactly that. For one or two binders, DIY is genuinely the right answer. Once the same set repeats across binders, printed sets win on cost, alignment, and durability, because home-printed tabs have no reinforcement at the edge where tabs fail.
