Poly vs. Paper Chart Dividers for Medical Records

Poly dividers are solid plastic sheets — ours are .015" thick — so they wipe clean with standard disinfectants, shrug off moisture, and simply don't tear. For charts that move through exam rooms, nursing stations, and front desks daily, poly is the durability ceiling.

The tabs are part of the same plastic sheet, so there's no separate tab edge to snag or peel. Printing is fused to the poly, so labels don't rub off with handling.

Paper dividers cost less and feel familiar. The failure points — the tab edge and the binding holes — are solved with Mylar reinforcement: a clear laminate over the tab and reinforced punch holes. For charts referenced weekly rather than daily, reinforced paper lasts years.

Choose paper when budget leads and handling is moderate; step up to poly for high-touch charts or anywhere wipe-down cleaning is routine.
