Paper vs. Poly Index Tabs: Which Should You Choose?

Both paper and poly index tabs do the same job — divide and label a binder — but they're built for different demands. Choosing the right material up front saves money and headaches.

Here's a straightforward comparison to help you decide.

Paper index tabs

Custom paper tabs are printed on durable 90# or 110# index stock and can be reinforced with a clear or colored Mylar strip along the binding edge for extra tear resistance. They're the most economical choice and suit the vast majority of binders, manuals, and reference sets.

Choose paper when the dividers live in an office, get normal handling, and cost matters.

Poly (plastic) index tabs

Custom poly tabs are made from durable .015 gauge polypropylene — a flexible plastic that resists tears, moisture, and constant page-turning far better than paper. They cost more per tab but last many times longer in tough conditions.

Choose poly when dividers face heavy daily use, damp or dusty environments, or need to survive years of handling — shop floors, clinics, field kits, and safety manuals.

Quick comparison

At a glance:

  • Durability: poly wins — tear and water resistant; paper is fine for normal use.
  • Cost: paper is more economical; poly is a long-term investment.
  • Reinforcement: paper offers optional Mylar edge reinforcing; poly is inherently tough.
  • Best for: paper → offices and everyday binders; poly → high-use and harsh environments.
