Individual & Replacement Index Tabs

In the designer, a set can be a single tab — position, text and color of your choosing — and the quantity is how many identical copies you want. Twenty-five sets of a one-tab design is a pack of twenty-five identical tabs, collated is meaningless at one tab so nothing is added, and the pack ships flat, punched or unpunched.

That structure beats stock singles in the two ways that matter: the text is not limited to an alphabet pack's choices, and the tab position is not stuck at whatever slot the pack maker chose — a replacement can land in the exact position of the tab it replaces.

Custom printing charges its setup once per order, which produces a curve worth knowing: 25 identical tabs cost $51.25, but 50 cost $56.00 and 100 cost $71.00. The second fifty tabs cost nine dollars.

For a firm that burns exhibit letters or an office that loses the same section tab repeatedly, the practical move is one order sized for the year rather than three orders sized for the emergency.

A replacement should disappear into the set it joins: same cut, same position, same body color, same Mylar. If the set was ours, the saved design has all of that and a match takes a minute. If it came from somewhere else, send a photo or a physical sample and we match the geometry and color from the piece.

The one honest caveat: paper stocks and Mylar tints vary between manufacturers, so a cross-vendor match is close rather than atomically identical. In a working binder that distinction disappears; in a presentation set being photographed, order the full set.

Litigation runs through individual exhibit tabs unpredictably — Exhibit 12 gets amended into 12A, the H tabs run dry the week of trial. Individual packs cover exactly the letters and numbers a case actually consumed, and the exhibit tab generator handles ranges when what you need is Exhibits 45 through 60 rather than forty more of one letter.

Paper with Mylar reinforcement is the standard for exhibit work; rush production is available when the deadline is the specification.

Honesty about the crossover: an A-Z set printed as a set costs $23.30 per set at 25 sets — under a dollar a tab — because the tabs share one setup. Buying twenty-six separate single-letter packs would re-pay setup twenty-six times.

The rule of thumb: replacing or topping up a few specific tabs, order individuals; building or rebuilding whole alphabets or section systems, order sets. Both price live in the designer, so the comparison takes thirty seconds.
