Letter is eight and a half by eleven. Legal is eight and a half by fourteen — same width, three inches longer. That's it.

The same width is why the mistake happens. Legal paper fits a letter binder's rings — it just hangs out the bottom, three inches at a time.

Who still uses legal? Real estate closings, deeds and leases, and some county courts — but most courts have standardized on letter. Check the local rule before you print.
